International Criminal Court prosecutor seeks arrest warrant for Myanmar junta leader over alleged crimes against humanity
ai generated text
The international community has been largely critical of the Myanmar military's actions in 2017, which led to the displacement of over 700,000 Rohingya to neighboring Bangladesh. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has been investigating these events and has requested an arrest warrant for the head of the Myanmar military, Min Aung Hlaing, for alleged crimes against humanity, including genocide, deportation, and persecution.
Today we have finally taken another step towards justice and accountability.
After an extensive, independent and impartial investigation, my office has concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that senior general and acting president Min Aung Hlaing ... bears criminal responsibility for crimes against humanity.
The judges will rule on the prosecutor's request, but ICC member countries should recognise this action as a reminder of the court's critical role when other doors to justice are closed.
For decades the international community allowed the Myanmar military to violate international law against ethnic and religious minorities, without taking any action. This encouraged the Myanmar military to scale up abuses, including the genocide of the Rohingya. Today we have finally taken another step towards justice and accountability.
This is the first application for an arrest warrant against a high-level Myanmar government official.
We remain concerned that the Burmese government has taken no actions to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and abuses, and there are continued reports of the Burmese military committing human rights violations and abuses throughout the country.
He must be held fully accountable for every innocent life he has destroyed and the families he has torn apart.
He's not only responsible for crimes against humanity against Rohingya but also for genocide and war crimes in Myanmar. He orchestrated the coup d'etat in 2021 and the subsequent mass murder, imprisonment and other atrocities against people throughout the country.
