India downgrades relations with Pakistan following tourist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir
India has ordered Pakistan's defense attaché to leave Punjab, canceled all visas granted to Pakistani nationals, and suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty. The country has also closed the Attari post in Punjab, the only land crossing between the two countries. In addition, India has ordered its citizens to return from Pakistan and has revoked visas for Pakistani nationals.
Pakistan has responded by closing its airspace to Indian aircraft and expelling Indian diplomats. Islamabad has also warned New Delhi that any disruption of its water supply would be considered an "act of war." Pakistan has threatened to suspend its participation in all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement.
Tensions between India and Pakistan are escalating following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. On one hand, India has announced several measures to downgrade ties with Pakistan, citing "cross-border linkages" as the reason. These measures include the closure of the main border crossing, suspension of a water-sharing treaty, and expulsion of diplomats.
