Iceland Coalition Collapse
Iceland's government coalition collapses leading PM to call new elections for November
The government of Iceland has been dissolved after Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson announced the end of the coalition government. The coalition consisted of the Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement, and the Progressive Party. The prime minister cited increasing tensions within the coalition, particularly on issues such as foreign policy, asylum seekers, and energy. According to the prime minister, these issues were not adequately addressed during the last election, and thus necessitated a re-evaluation. As a result, elections are to be held on November 30, in accordance with the 45-day timeline for dissolution of parliament to take effect.
