Iceland Elects Businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir as President
Halla Tomasdottir has been elected as Iceland's second female president, winning 34.3-34.6% of the vote in the presidential election. According to reports, she defeated former Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdotter with 25.2-24.8% of the vote. The final results showed that Tomasdottir won the election on June 2nd, with a margin of around 9-10 percentage points over her closest competitor. Notably, all three top finishers in the election were women. As president, Tomasdottir will hold a largely ceremonial role, although she does have the power to veto legislation or submit it to a national referendum.
