IDF announces strikes deep inside Lebanon in response to attack on Golan Heights
The situation between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated with near-daily cross-border attacks, resulting in hundreds of deaths. Despite indications that both sides were trying to avoid a major confrontation, a miscalculation led to a deadly missile strike on Majdal Shams, a Druze community in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing at least 12 children and teens. Israel blames Hezbollah for the attack, while the Lebanese group denies responsibility. The Israeli military has carried out a series of strikes across Lebanon, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to hold Hezbollah accountable. Diplomats are scrambling to prevent a surge in fighting, but concerns about an all-out regional war are rising. The incident has been described as the deadliest attack on Israeli civilians in nine months of near-daily exchanges of fire between the two sides.
We are deeply concerned about the risk of further escalation and destabilisation.
We both agreed that widening of conflict in the region is in nobody's interest.
I spoke to prime minister Najib Mikati today to express my concern at escalating tension and welcomed the government of Lebanon's statement urging for cessation of all violence.
Overnight, the IAF [Israeli Air Force] struck a series of Hezbollah terror targets both deep inside Lebanese territory and in southern Lebanon, including weapons caches and terrorist infrastructure in the areas of Chabriha, Borj El Chmali, and Beqaa, Kfarkela, Rab El Thalathine, Khiam, and Tayr Harfa.
This is a Hezbollah rocket. And whoever launches such a rocket into a built-up area wants to kill civilians, wants to kill children.
The Hezbollah attack today crossed all red lines, and the response will be accordingly. We are approaching the moment of an all-out war against Hezbollah and Lebanon.
Hezbollah is responsible for it and they will pay the price.
Hezbollah will pay a heavy price which it has not paid up to now.
The Islamic Resistance has absolutely nothing to do with the incident, and categorically denies all false allegations in this regard.
The other question is – what will Hezbollah's response be? If it is a measured response, then the conflict can be contained. But if it is not a measured response, then we are talking about this conflict, which has been largely confined to the border, widening.
We are trying to restrain Hezbollah now from retaliating to whatever the Israelis do next.
Israel will escalate in a limited way and Hezbollah will respond in a limited way ... These are the assurances we've received.
Not because of conviction but because of any attack on our country, we support Hezbollah in this regard.
