Hurricane John weakens over Mexico after causing at least 22 reported deaths and widespread flooding
Hurricane John made landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast a week ago, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The storm first affected the state of Guerrero, where 18 people were killed, according to local media. It then dissipated and reformed offshore, causing further damage and flooding in areas such as Acapulco, where several neighborhoods were inundated with water. Residents in at-risk areas were told to evacuate, and parts of the city received over 500mm of rain in a short period. The storm has been referred to as a "zombie" storm, as it dissipated before strengthening back into a storm. At least 15 people have died as a result of the hurricane, with some sources reporting up to 18 fatalities. The storm's impact has been significant, with major cargo ports affected and widespread flooding reported.
Shelters and kitchens have been set up and food supplies are being distributed.
Fortunately, the water is now receding and aid to the victims will continue.
This heavy rainfall will likely cause significant and catastrophic life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
