Hurricane Beryl hits Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Mexico brace for impact
Hurricane Beryl has caused widespread destruction in the Caribbean, with a direct hit on Grenada's Carriacou Island and passage through several other islands. The storm made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, the earliest recorded in the Atlantic, and brought heavy rain and devastating winds to the region. According to reports, near-total destruction was caused on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, with roofs ripped off, fishing boats jumbled, and 95% of homes damaged or destroyed. The storm has killed at least 10 people, with three deaths each reported in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Venezuela. Jamaica was also severely affected, with at least one person killed and widespread damage reported. The Cayman Islands were next in the storm's path, with officials preparing shelters and evacuating small coastal communities. Mexico is also bracing for the storm's arrival, with officials warning that the country could be hit twice in the coming days.
Beryl would be the sixth and earliest this far east in the tropical Atlantic.
Weakening is forecast during the next day or two, though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane until it makes landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Everybody is homeless ... It is going to be a Herculean effort to rebuild.
We are very concerned about a wide variety of life threatening impacts in Jamaica.
