Hunter Biden pleads guilty to tax evasion charges in federal court
Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, has pleaded guilty to all nine charges in his federal tax evasion case. The charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison, relate to his failure to pay $1.4 million in taxes over the past decade. According to prosecutors, Biden spent the money on luxury living, sex workers, and a drug habit instead of paying his taxes. Initially, Biden had intended to enter a plea where he would accept the charges while maintaining his innocence, but prosecutors objected, and he eventually agreed to plead guilty. Biden's lawyer stated that he would maintain his innocence through an "Alford Plea", which is a type of plea where a defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the evidence against them is sufficient to convict. The guilty plea came just before jury selection was set to begin in Los Angeles, and it is expected to bring a speedy resolution to the election-year case.
He has overcome an addiction. He's one of the brightest, most decent men I know. I said I'd abide by the jury decision.
Hunter Biden is not innocent. Hunter Biden is guilty.
They want to slime him because that is the whole purpose.
This can be resolved today. It's not a complicated issue.
There is overwhelming evidence of the defendant's guilt.
Hunter put his family first today, and it was a brave and loving thing for him to do.
When I was addicted, I wasn't thinking about my taxes, I was thinking about surviving. But the jury would never have heard that or know that I had paid every penny of my back taxes including penalties.
As I have stated, addiction is not an excuse, but it is an explanation for some of my failures at issue in this case.
I will not subject my family to more pain, more invasions of privacy and needless embarrassment. For all I have put them through over the years, I can spare them this, and so I have decided to plead guilty.
