Hungary gets new president Tamas Sulyok following scandal

Hungary experienced a political crisis following the resignation of President Katalin Novak in February. Novak, an ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, stepped down after it was disclosed that she had granted a pardon to an accomplice of a convicted child abuser. In her place, the ruling party Fidesz nominated Tamas Sulyok, 67, as the new president. Sulyok currently serves as head of Hungary's Constitutional Court. This event marks the end of Novak's tenure as the first female president in Hungarian history and has been described as the biggest political crisis Orban has faced since regaining power in 2010.
