Hong Kong Journalist Group Head Fired by Wall Street Journal Amid Press Freedom Concerns

Selina Cheng, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, lost her job after refusing to withdraw from the election for chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA). According to Cheng, her supervisor asked her to quit the board, which she has served on since 2021. She believes her termination was linked to taking up the position at HKJA on June 22nd, despite being told it was due to restructuring. The firing was announced at a press conference, which Cheng found "appalling". State-run media outlets have accused the HKJA of being embattled, but there is no clear evidence to support this claim.
