Historic Gold Watch Given to Titanic Rescue Captain Sells for Record Sum

A gold watch owned by Captain Arthur Rostron of the RMS Carpathia has been purchased by a private collector in the US for a record-breaking amount. The sale surpasses the previous record set in April when a gold pocket watch belonging to Titanic passenger John Jacob Astor sold for £1.175 million. The watch in question is an 18-carat Tiffany & Co timepiece given to Captain Rostron by survivors he rescued in 1912, including the widow of John Jacob Astor and two other widows of wealthy businessmen. The private collector paid a total of £2.1 million, including fees and taxes, to acquire the watch, making it the highest amount ever paid for Titanic memorabilia.
