Greece legalizes same-sex marriage in Orthodox Christian country
The Greek parliament has passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage, making Greece the first majority Orthodox Christian country to establish marriage equality for all. The bill was supported by 176 out of 300 lawmakers and opposed by 76. This legislation also allows same-sex families to adopt children, making Greece the 37th country in the world to do so. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' New Democracy party backed this reform. The vote took place amid jubilation and controversy, with people waving rainbow flags celebrating outside the parliament building. Dozens of lawmakers were present for the historic vote.
