Grammy-winning Iranian singer sentenced to three years in prison for "Mahsa Amini protest anthem"
Shervin Hajipour, a 26-year-old Iranian musician, wrote and published a song titled "Baraye" during nationwide protests in September 2022, triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini. Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, had been arrested for allegedly violating Iran's strict dress code for women. Hajipour was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for "inciting unrest against national security" and "spreading propaganda against the regime." According to another article, he was also given an additional five-year suspended sentence and banned from leaving the country for 10 years.
