Germany wins Olympic gold in mixed triathlon despite concerns over Seine River water quality

The mixed relay triathlon event at the Paris 2024 Olympics took place on Monday, with athletes swimming in the Seine River despite high bacteria levels. The event went ahead as scheduled after the all-clear was given on Sunday evening. Germany won the gold medal, with the USA and Great Britain completing the podium. The relay consisted of a 300-meter swim, 7-kilometer bike ride, and 1.8-kilometer run. Some athletes, including those from Switzerland and Belgium, had fallen ill after participating in initial triathlon races last week, leading to Belgium's withdrawal from the mixed relay. The cost of upgrading Paris' sewage systems has been estimated at 1.4 billion euros.
