Germany recalls ambassador from Iran in protest of execution of German-Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd
Jamshid Sharmahd, a 69-year-old German-Iranian dual national, was executed in Tehran on charges of plotting attacks in Iran. He had been held prisoner since 2020, accused of being the ringleader of the Tondar group, a terrorist organization. German politicians condemned the execution, with some labeling it an "extrajudicial killing of a hostage." The German government summoned the Iranian charge d'affaires in Berlin to protest the execution, warning of "serious consequences" for Iran's "inhumane regime." Sharmahd's daughter, Gazelle Sharmahd, expressed her disappointment that the German chancellor and the US secretary of state had declined to meet her. The execution comes at a time when Iran's ruling regime is facing pressure from multiple fronts, including domestic protests and international sanctions.
There were some voices who wanted to wait and see how the regime would develop after Pezeshkian's election.
This terrible execution shows us clearly how we should judge this new government.
The execution of the death sentence against our fellow citizen Jamshid Sharmahd is a heinous crime.
We have campaigned tirelessly for Jamshid Sharmahd and sent a high-ranking team from the foreign office to Tehran on several occasions. We have repeatedly made it clear to Tehran that the execution of a German citizen will have serious consequences.
Jamshid Sharmahd did not even receive the opportunity to defend himself against the charges at the trial.
No terrorist enjoys impunity in Iran … A German passport does not provide impunity to anyone, let alone a terrorist criminal.
His kidnapping and rendition, as well as sham trial and reports of torture, were reprehensible.
Sharmahd should never have been imprisoned in the first place.
The unlawful abduction of Sharmahd, his subsequent torture in custody, the unfair show trial and today's execution are exemplary of the countless crimes of the Iranian regime.
Jamshid Sharmahd was kidnapped in the United Arab Emirates and unlawfully transferred to Iran, where he was sentenced to death without a fair trial.
