Gaza Hospitals Face Fuel Crisis as Medical Supplies Run Low
The situation in Rafah, Gaza is escalating as hospitals risk being overwhelmed by a surge of sick and injured people. The Abu Yousef al-Najjar hospital was hastily evacuated due to the intensifying fighting. Meanwhile, the Israeli army seized control of the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, rendering the second main aid delivery route unusable according to UN officials. The closure of the border crossing has significant implications for humanitarian operations in the region. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that there is only enough fuel to run hospitals in the southern Gaza Strip for three more days, and without further supplies, all humanitarian operations will cease. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that fuel expected to be allowed into the region had been blocked.
The closure of the border crossing continues to prevent the UN from bringing fuel. Without fuel all humanitarian operations will stop. Border closures are also impeding delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
At a time when fragile humanitarian operations urgently require expansion, the Rafah military operation is further limiting our ability to reach thousands of people who have been living in dire conditions without adequate food, sanitation, health services and security.
Countless more civilian casualties. Countless more families forced to flee yet again – with nowhere safe to go.
It was a bitter experience, and the situation now is catastrophic.
