French rail network disrupted by malicious acts ahead of Paris Olympics
France's high-speed rail network, operated by SNCF, has been targeted by a series of arson attacks and vandalism, which have caused significant disruptions to train services. The attacks, described by SNCF as a "massive attack aimed at paralyzing the high-speed line network", have resulted in the cancellation of a large number of trains and the diversion of others. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete has condemned the "criminal acts" which are affecting people's holiday plans. The situation is expected to last throughout the weekend while repairs are conducted. The attacks have targeted installations along the lines connecting Paris with the country's west, north, and east, as well as trains to neighboring Belgium and London under the English Channel. SNCF has urged passengers to postpone their journeys and stay away from train stations. The incidents occurred on the same day as the highly anticipated opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
Disturbing such a festival of peace with acts of violence can never be accepted and demands the most determined rejection.
Who is responsible? Either it's from within, or it's been ordered from abroad, it's too early to say.
The investigation is starting, I call on everyone to be cautious.
What we know, what we see, is that this operation was prepared, coordinated, that nerve centres were targeted, which shows a form of knowledge of the network to know where to strike.
Our intelligence services and law enforcement are mobilised to find and punish the perpetrators of these criminal acts.
There are reports of disruption across main line train services affecting Eurostar services and domestic high speed trains in several parts of France. French railways state that services could be disrupted until Monday, July 29 and are advising travellers to postpone travel if possible. Check with your travel operator, or railway operator's website.
A massive attack took place last night to paralyze the high-speed rail network.
We have uncovered a certain number of elements that allow us to think that we will soon know who is responsible for what clearly did not sabotage the Olympic Games but did sabotage part of the holidays of the French people.
Last night, the SNCF was victim of several acts of vandalism on the Atlantic, Northern and Eastern high-speed lines. Fires were deliberately set to damage our installations.
