French Police Clash with Protesters Over La Rochelle Reservoirs
French environmentalists have been protesting against the construction of massive irrigation reservoirs in La Rochelle, leading to clashes with police. The protests, which included a 2,000-strong march, resulted in property damage and injuries on both sides. According to reports, around 400 participants were far-left radicals, known as "black bloc," who engaged in violent behavior, including throwing projectiles and launching fireworks at security forces. One policewoman suffered burns and five lightly-wounded demonstrators received medical care. The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, condemned the protesters, labeling them "radical" leftists. Despite the violence, the protests remain a significant concern for local authorities, with several shops damaged or looted in La Rochelle following multiple rallies against the irrigation project.
A number of radical, extreme left-wing participants have attacked property and rampaged a supermarket.
It is hard to see a link to defense of the environment.
