French Election Campaign Marred by Widespread Violence Against Candidates and Activists

The French parliamentary election campaign has seen a surge in violence, with over 50 physical assaults reported on candidates and campaigners. According to Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, more than 30 people have been arrested, including individuals from far-right and far-left groups. The attacks range from minor incidents to extremely serious cases. Despite the efforts of authorities to maintain order, Darmanin expressed concerns about further disorder in the lead-up to the second round of elections on Sunday.
