France says "immunities apply" to Netanyahu over ICC arrest warrant
ai generated text
French officials have taken a nuanced stance on the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant. Despite the warrants, France has stated that it intends to continue working closely with Netanyahu, and has suggested that he would not be immediately arrested if he were to visit French territory.
A state cannot be held to act in a way that is incompatible with its obligations in terms of international law with regards to immunities granted to states which are not party to the ICC.
In accordance with the long-standing friendship between France and Israel, two democracies committed to the rule of law and to respect for a professional and independent justice system, France intends to continue working in close cooperation with Prime Minister Netanyahu and the other Israeli authorities to achieve peace and security for all in the Middle East.
France is very attached to international justice and very attached to the ICC being able to work in complete independence.
Surely that was the deal, that France would get a mention in the official statement announcing the ceasefire in Lebanon that was published by France and the United States yesterday.
Such immunities apply to Prime Minister Netanyahu and the other ministers concerned and will have to be taken into account should the I.C.C. request of us their arrest and surrender.
A cornerstone principle of the ICC Statute is that no one is above the law, including heads of state sought for arrest.
