France rushes emergency police reinforcements to New Caledonia
Violence has erupted in New Caledonia, a French Pacific territory, over plans to impose new voting rules. The unrest has resulted in the deadliest violence in four decades, with reports of explosions, gunshots, and Molotov cocktails. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has deployed an additional 1,000 security forces to the region, which began arriving at La Tontouta International Airport on Thursday.
The situation has been described as "calmer" by authorities after Paris declared a state of emergency, but areas of the territory have reportedly "escaped" state control. High Commissioner of the Republic stated that reinforcements will be sent to regain control over these areas.
