France Transfers New Caledonia Independence Activists to Mainland for Pre-Trial Detention
Christian Tein, head of the pro-independence group CCAT, was charged over recent violence in New Caledonia that resulted in nine deaths. He was flown to mainland France along with six other activists, who were transferred to pre-trial detention on a specially chartered plane. The transfer was organized during the night and allowed the investigation into their alleged wrongdoings to continue "in a calm manner and without any pressure." Authorities did not immediately specify what charges Tein faces.
