France Hosts Conference on Military and Humanitarian Aid to Lebanon
ai generated text
An international aid conference for Lebanon has commenced in Paris with the objective of raising hundreds of millions of dollars for the war-torn country. The conference is being attended by 70 countries and 15 international organisations. Paris seeks to aid in Lebanon's sovereignty restoration and strengthening of its institutions, amidst a two-year presidency vacuum caused by political factions' inability to agree on a new leader. Recent Israeli military actions in Lebanon include aerial bombardments and ground invasions targeting Hezbollah, with the Lebanese government reporting over 2,000 civilian casualties and the Israeli army killing several Hezbollah leaders.
This conflict cannot be resolved by military means alone.
The president is doing his job by organising a summit to show that he's not abandoning the people of Lebanon, but I don't expect much from it.
We need a cease-fire. Then the Lebanese army has to be sent to the south of the country to reestablish the state's authority.
This should have happened long ago, according to the 2006 UN Resolution 1701.
France could become more present in Lebanon diplomatically because of the Paris meeting.
This has not really been the case since 2005, towards the end of French President Jacques Chirac's term of office.
France wants to fill the diplomatic gap created by the upcoming US presidential election.
France now has a very bad relationship with Israel.
As a result, Macron can barely make any financial promises to Lebanon and that limits [France's] political influence.
Moreover, neither Hezbollah nor Israel want a cease-fire at the moment.
Lebanon is a failed state with a huge national debt and a corrupt elite that has not had a president since October 2022.
