A shooting occurred at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulting in the deaths of four people, including two students and two teachers. At least nine others were injured and taken to hospitals. The suspect, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, was taken into custody and will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. Gray surrendered to police after being confronted by a school resource officer. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.
Four dead. An additional nine taken to various hospitals with injuries. Suspect in custody and alive. Reports that the suspect has been 'neutralized' are inaccurate.
The father stated he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them. The subject denied making the threats online. Jackson County alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject.
At approximately 10:23 a.m., officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting.
At about 9:30 this morning we received the first call that there was an active shooter on this campus.
The shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up that it would end with an OIS – an officer-involved shooting. He gave up, got on the ground, and the deputy took him into custody.
This hits home for me. I was born and raised here. I went to school in this school system, my kids go to this school system. I'm proud of this school system.
We have to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. It doesn't have to be this way.
It's just outrageous that every day, in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their parents to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive.
What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart. We cannot continue to accept this as normal.
These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart.
Students across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal.
The shooter is in custody (...) He is a 14-year-old student here at the high school.
What is more important for me to mention here to you is my heartfelt sympathy to the parents, the students that were here.
Of those that are deceased, two were students and two were teachers here at the school.
We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.
I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state.
