Former Spanish soccer boss Luis Rubiales detained and released by authorities in Madrid

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was detained and questioned by police upon his arrival at Madrid's airport from an international flight. According to different reports, he was not arrested but was released a few hours later. His home had been searched two weeks prior as part of a corruption and money laundering investigation. The investigative judge is expected to summon him for further questioning in the coming days. Rubiales' lawyer confirmed that he was asked to accompany officers to a police station where they read him his rights, took his fingerprints, and searched his belongings. He was detained by the Civil Guard's Central Operative Unit (UCO), which investigates and fights serious and organized crime in Spain.
