Former South African Parliament Speaker Charged with Money Laundering and Corruption
Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, a 67-year-old South African politician and former parliament speaker, resigned from her position on Wednesday and turned herself in to the police on Thursday. She is currently under investigation for allegedly soliciting bribes from a former military contractor, as well as requesting a wig. The incidents were reported publicly, adding to the political challenges facing the African National Congress (ANC) less than two months before national elections. Mapisa-Nqakula maintained that she is not a flight risk during her court appearance in Pretoria.
