Former Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon's husband charged with embezzling party funds

A 59-year-old man identified as Peter Murrell was charged with embezzlement of funds from the Scottish National Party (SNP) following an investigation by Scottish police. Murrell, who is married to Scotland's former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, was taken into custody earlier in the day and later released after being charged. An SNP spokesperson described the development as a "shock." Previously, both Murrell and Sturgeon had been arrested and released without charge. The embezzlement allegations come at a critical time for the SNP, as a UK national election is expected this year. Murrell has reportedly resigned his SNP membership in the wake of these charges.
