European Court of Justice imposes daily fine on Hungary until compliance with EU refugee laws
The European Court of Justice has ordered Hungary to pay a fine of €200 million for refusing to uphold the rights of asylum seekers. The court also imposed a daily penalty payment of €1 million until Hungary changes its policy. The decision was made after the European Commission launched a new judicial action seeking financial sanctions against Hungary. The country's anti-immigrant government has taken a hard line on people entering the country, and current Hungarian law only allows applicants to submit requests for asylum outside of the country, defying EU rules.
