Eastern and Southern African leaders hold summit on DRC conflict
ai generated text
Multiple African leaders have expressed concern over the rapid advancement of the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the group capturing the city of Goma and pushing towards Bukavu. The Southern African Development Community and East African Community blocs have called for warring parties to hold peace talks within five days. A summit of regional leaders has also called for an immediate unconditional ceasefire within the same time frame. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame has been accused of backing the M23 rebels, although his involvement is not explicitly confirmed.
If nothing is done, the worst may be yet to come for the people of the eastern DRC but also beyond the country's borders.
We call on all parties to actualise the ceasefire, and specifically on the M23 to halt further advancement and the armed forces of DRC to cease all retaliatory measures.
We must resist the temptation to think that we can somehow shoot or bombard our way into a solution in the face of such a complex situation.
History will judge us harshly if we remain still and watch the situation worsen, day by day.
