Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters arrested after Columbia calls in police
Pro-Palestinian activists from Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) occupied the Butler Library on Columbia University's campus for several hours. The occupation began with masked protesters storming into the second-floor reading room around 3 pm, chanting slogans and beating drums. The protesters refused to disperse despite repeated requests from public safety officers. Two officers were injured in the chaotic scenes that ensued. The protesters also defaced furniture and framed portraits, unfurling Palestinian flags in the process. The occupation lasted for several hours, with NYPD eventually arresting "multiple individuals" who refused to leave. The protest was aimed at highlighting the university's alleged links to Israel and its profiting from "imperialist violence."
Requesting the presence of the NYPD is not the outcome we wanted, but it was absolutely necessary to secure the safety of our community.
Columbia strongly condemns violence on our campus, antisemitism and all forms of hate and discrimination, some of which we witnessed today.
Disruptions to our academic activities will not be tolerated and are violations of our rules and policies; this is especially unacceptable while our students study and prepare for final exams.
Requesting the presence of the NYPD is not the outcome we wanted, but it was absolutely necessary to secure the safety of our community.
Everyone has the right to peacefully protest. But violence, vandalism or destruction of property are completely unacceptable.
Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation.
We are reviewing the visa status of the trespassers and vandals who took over Columbia University's library.
Over 100 people have just flooded Butler Library and renamed it the Basel Al-Araj Popular University.
We have nothing to lose but our chains!
The flood shows that as long as Columbia funds and profits from imperialist violence, the people will continue to disrupt Columbia's profits and legitimacy. Repression breeds resistance – if Columbia escalates repression, the people will continue to escalate disruptions on this campus.
