Donald Trump urges Taiwan to pay for its defense

According to Trump, the US is like an insurance company, implying that Taiwan should pay for its defense. He stated, "We're no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn't give us anything." This stance diverges from the Biden administration's position, which has repeatedly pledged to deploy US troops in defense of Taiwan. Taiwanese Prime Minister Cho Jung-tai responded by emphasizing the strength of the US-Taiwan relations, saying that they are "rock-solid" and have been for years. Trump's comments also sidestepped a question about whether he would promise to defend Taiwan from an attack by China.
