Death toll tops 1,000 after Hajj marked by extreme heat
The death toll from this year's Haj pilgrimage to Mecca has surpassed 1,000, with an estimated 1,081 fatalities reported by around 10 countries. The high number of deaths is attributed to the extreme heat during the pilgrimage, with temperatures reaching as high as 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees Fahrenheit) in Mecca. Many pilgrims were seen collapsing on the road or in wheelchairs, and some corpses appear to have been left where they fell.
