Deadly RSF Attacks on Darfur Famine-Hit Camps Leave Hundreds Feared Dead
ai generated text
Recent violence in Darfur, Sudan has resulted in the deaths of at least 56 civilians. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are responsible for this violence, which occurred over two days in the town of Um Kadadah. In a separate incident, over 100 people, including 20 children, are feared dead following an attack by the RSF on El-Fasher. The RSF launched "coordinated ground and aerial assaults" on the city.
This represents yet another deadly and unacceptable escalation in a series of brutal attacks on displaced people and aid workers in Sudan since the onset of this conflict nearly two years ago.
The colleagues from an international non-governmental organisation were killed while operating one of the very few remaining health posts still operational in the camp.
Shocking reports are emerging from El Fasher, Darfur, where indiscriminate RSF attacks have killed civilians, including aid workers. This gives added urgency to Tuesday's Sudan conference in London with international partners. All sides must commit to protection of civilians.
It appears that the RSF is attacking Zamzam, Abu Shouk and El Fasher simultaneously for the first time, including a ground assault on Zamzam. This is a significant escalation in violence against civilians in the North Darfur region and requires immediate diplomatic response.
We understand this was a targeted attack on all health infrastructure in the region to prevent access to healthcare for internally displaced people. We are horrified that one of our clinics was also part of this attack – along with other health facilities in El Fasher.
This was a targeted attack on the most vulnerable, elderly people, women, and children.
