Curfew Imposed in Alice Springs Following Night of Violence

The Northern Territory Police Commissioner, Michael Murphy, has declared a three-night public social disorder declaration in parts of Alice Springs due to significant harm and civil disturbances over the past 72 hours. The decision was made after a series of crimes contributed to the situation, including an attack on police officers who were walking home from work. It is unclear if the offenders identified the officers as police before attacking them. Under new laws introduced in May, Commissioner Murphy has the power to impose lockdowns for up to three days, which he believes will act as a "pressure-relief valve" and improve community safety during this time.
