However, Sir Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, has stressed that these discussions are not about money, but rather a conversation on the concept of reparatory justice. This contradicts the views of some Commonwealth leaders, who have been pushing for the UK to apologize and pay reparations for its historical role in the slave trade. The UK government has insisted that it does not pay reparations.
