Coalition of European countries consider recognizing Palestinian State on May 21

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has announced that Spain and several other EU member countries plan to recognize a Palestinian state on May 21. This move would bring the total number of UN member states recognizing Palestine to over 140. According to Spanish government sources, May 21 is being considered as the date for recognition, coinciding with the last meeting of ministers before the European Parliament election campaign begins on June 9.
We are talking with several of our European colleagues to analyze the best time to make that recognition.
This morning I had a conversation with the prime minister of Ireland about the willingness of both governments to recognize the Palestinian state and to coordinate our efforts to bring it to fruition. The two-state solution is the only way to achieve a future of peace, security, and stability in the region.
Each country must make its own decisions regarding when and where it makes recognitions of this type.
