Chinese military plane violates Japanese territorial airspace for the first time according to Japan
A Chinese military surveillance plane, identified as a Y-9, entered Japanese territorial airspace off the country's southwestern coast on Monday, prompting Japan to scramble fighter jets to warn the aircraft to leave. This is the first known incursion by China's military into Japanese airspace. Japan's Self-Defense Force put fighter jets on high alert and issued a warning to the Chinese aircraft, but no weapons were fired. The incident has been condemned by Japan as a "serious violation" of its airspace, with the country's chief government spokesman calling it "utterly unacceptable". The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, where China is competing for influence against the US. Japan has accused China of repeated maritime provocations near disputed islands in the East China Sea, and this latest incident is seen as a further escalation of regional tensions.
In recent years, China's military activities in the vicinity of our country have tended to expand and become more and more active.
The government will continue to pay close attention to China's military activities and will take all possible measures to ensure vigilant surveillance and airspace violation measures.
The invasion of our country's airspace by Chinese military aircraft is not only a serious violation of our country's sovereignty, but also a threat to our safety, and is completely unacceptable.
We have to be ready to anticipate and to get used to these kinds of acts of China which are patently illegal, as we have repeatedly said.
We have to expect these kinds of behaviour from China because this is a struggle.
Washington probably will be looking at ways to avoid uncontrolled escalation, although this proposition can be difficult to put into practice.
Although it is consistent with China's behaviour as regards Taiwan and the Philippines in recent years.
This latest incursion may seem alarming as China tends not to venture directly into Japanese airspace.
