Chinese Warships Spotted Near Australian Coast
ai generated text
Multiple sources are reporting the presence of three Chinese warships off the east coast of Australia. Defense Minister Richard Marles has stated that the ships are being monitored but are not considered a threat, and are not breaking international law. The ships were first spotted off mainland Australia, and have since been surveilled as they sailed south.
Australia respects the rights of all states to exercise freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace, under international law, particularly the UN convention on the law of the sea.
And just as they have a right to be in international waters, which is what they are doing, we have a right to be prudent and to make sure that we are surveilling them, which is what we are doing.
And whenever this mission is over on the part of the Chinese task group, we will assess everything we have seen to make a proper assessment of exactly what they were trying to achieve through this mission.
We are keeping a close watch on them and we will be making sure that we watch every move.
We have not been informed by the Chinese government why this task group has been deployed into our region, and we have not been informed what its future plans are.
