China Conducts Largest-Ever Naval Drills Around Taiwan in Escalating Maritime Tensions
ai generated text
China has deployed a large-scale maritime force, comprising approximately 60 warships and 30 coast guard vessels, in the Taiwan Strait, according to Taiwan's Defense Ministry. This deployment is reportedly the largest of its kind in decades and has been accompanied by an increase in Chinese military aircraft activity in the region. In the past 24 hours, Taiwan has detected 47 Chinese military aircraft and 12 warships around the island, with a total of 53 Chinese military aircraft and 11 navy ships tracked by the Defense Ministry. The deployment is seen as a response to Taiwan's decision to participate in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and has been condemned by the Taiwanese government as "provocative acts".
We take necessary measures to resolutely defend the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and safeguard the fundamental interests of compatriots on both sides.
We will absolutely not let things go unchecked.
These actions inject uncertainty and risk into the region, creating disruptions for neighbouring countries, and it confirms China's a troublemaker that undermines peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The primary military forces used to coerce Taiwan in the past primarily came from the Eastern Theater Command. However, what I am referring to now includes not only the Eastern Theater Command but also forces from the Northern and Southern Theater Commands.
It can indeed be said that the scale of these maritime forces exceeds the four drills since 2022.
The current scale is the largest compared to the previous four. Regardless of whether they have announced drills, they are posing great threats to us.
The PLA's recent activities not only exerted military pressure on Taiwan. Its naval forces, specifically, have significantly raised its posture around Taiwan and the Western Pacific.
And so, you know, we want to see this region, this area remain open to freedom of navigation and the ability to fly the skies and international airways whenever we want to.
Again, our policy hasn't changed. We'll continue to do what we can to help Taiwan acquire the means to defend itself.
We're going to continue to work with our allies and partners to ensure that we can do just that.
