Antarctica Sovereignty Claims
Chilean President Boric embarks on historic journey to South Pole amid sovereignty claim concerns
Chile's President Gabriel Boric led a historic two-day trip, named Operation Pole Star III, to extend environmental monitoring of pollutants on Antarctica. The trip was part of Chile's territorial claim, one of seven countries to have a claim in Antarctica.
During the trip, Boric and his team made several stops before reaching the US-run Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Boric is notable for being the first Latin American leader to reach the Earth's southernmost point. He described the visit as a "milestone" for Chile. His office stated that the trip confirmed Chile's claim to sovereignty over part of Antarctica.
