Frank Auerbach, a renowned 20th century painter, has died at the age of 93. Born in Berlin in 1931, he fled to England as a child refugee during the Second World War in 1939. Auerbach's work focused on a small group of sitters, including his wife Julia and long-time lover Stella West, as well as views of post-war construction sites, capturing the frenetic atmosphere of the time.
I try to paint the whole picture all the time.
I hope I still have what Hemingway called the 'shit detector', that I'm still severe enough with myself if something is not finished to destroy it and start again.
The school of London idea was total rubbish. But I think they are very good painters and I am not ashamed to be put in the same category as them.
It's just that I find everything except for painting not very interesting.
It's no good presenting artists as approachable blokes who happen to paint, although some may have the coolness or grace to lend themselves to this. I am the beast in the burrow who does not wish to be invaded.
I became solvent so late that it's too late for me to change.
Even a beautifully painted section is not of the slightest use to me unless everything is interdependent and lives within the same flow.
We have lost a dear friend and remarkable artist but take comfort knowing his voice will resonate for generations to come.
