Brazilian authorities formally accuse Jair Bolsonaro of leading alleged 2022 coup attempt against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

In late 2022, before Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office, a plot was hatched to kill the then president-elect, capture or kill Lula's vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, and assassinate Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes. The plot allegedly included plans for a coup d'état that would have led to the violent overthrow of the democratic state. Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has been accused of having "full knowledge" of the plot and is among the 37 people charged by the federal police. Bolsonaro has denied all allegations that he tried to stay in office after losing the election and has vowed to "fight" the charges.
