Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro charged with leading alleged 2022 coup attempt against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva

Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has been charged with leading a far-right conspiracy to cling to power through a military coup. The charges were filed to the Supreme Court by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, alleging that Bolsonaro, along with 33 others, participated in a plan to stay in power. The alleged plot began in 2021, with efforts to undermine public trust in electronic voting machines, and continued in 2022, when Bolsonaro met with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives to discuss accusations of voting fraud. Despite finding no evidence of election fraud, defendants allegedly continued their campaign to discredit the electoral system.
