Botswana Diamond Discovery

Botswana discovery yields 2,492-carat diamond, potentially the world's second-largest gem-quality diamond ever found

A 2,492-carat rough diamond has been discovered in Botswana's Karowe Diamond Mine by Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp. This stone is considered exceptional and is the largest diamond found in over 100 years, with a weight that makes it the second-largest diamond ever mined, behind the 3,016.75-carat Cullinan Diamond discovered in South Africa in 1905. The diamond's value and quality have not been disclosed by Lucara. The discovery was made possible by the use of X-ray technology. The Karowe mine, where the diamond was found, is located about 500km north of Gaborone. The Cullinan Diamond, which was discovered in 1905, was cut into several gems, some of which are part of the Crown Jewels.
