Border Force Officer and Two Others Charged with Alleged Espionage Ties to Hong Kong
A group of individuals, including Chi Leung "Peter" Wai, a UK Border Force officer and special constable, Chung Biu Yuen, a retired Hong Kong police officer, and Matthew Trickett, have been charged with assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service in an alleged foreign interference operation. According to reports, the trio was involved in forcing entry into a British address, which is considered unlawful. Wai, who works as an office manager at Hong Kong's Economic and Trade Office, has over 20 years of experience in the military, police, and private security sectors, according to his website. Yuen, also a retired Hong Kong police officer, serves as an office manager for the City of London. The charges are part of a high-profile effort by British authorities to combat foreign interference.
A number of arrests were made and searches carried out across England as part of this investigation. While led from London, the Counter Terrorism Policing network has been crucial to disrupting this activity and we have worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service since the start of the investigation.
While these offences are concerning, I want to reassure the public that we do not believe there to be any wider threat to them. This investigation remains ongoing, but now that charges have been brought, I urge people not to speculate or comment further in relation to this case.
The Chinese side firmly rejects and strongly condemns the UK's fabrication in the so-called case and its unwarranted accusation against the Hong Kong government.
