Biden administration limits asylum seekers at US-Mexico border with new executive order
President Joe Biden has signed an executive order aimed at controlling the US-Mexico border. The order temporarily shuts down the border to asylum seekers attempting to cross between lawful ports of entry when daily crossings exceed 2,500. According to reports, this threshold was already surpassed on Monday with 3,500 illegal crossings recorded by officials. Under the new rules, the border will reopen only once the number of daily crossings falls below 1,500. The order also introduces a more rigorous standard for establishing credible fear of returning to one's home country for those seeking asylum. The move comes after Republicans rejected a bipartisan immigration deal and amid concerns over the surge in migrant arrivals at the US-Mexico border.
It tramples on the universal right to claim asylum and prevents migrants from attempting to legally access safety and security in the United States. It is ripe for legal challenges and antithetical to our values.
By reviving Trump's asylum ban, President Biden has undermined American values and abandoned our nation's obligations to provide people fleeing persecution, violence, and authoritarianism with an opportunity to seek refuge in the US.
Republicans in Congress chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security.
These actions will be in effect when high levels of encounters at the Southern Border exceed our ability to deliver timely consequences, as is the case today.
These actions will be in effect when the Southern border is overwhelmed, and they will make it easier for immigration officers to quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain.
Rather than address humanitarian issues at the border effectively and with the nuance they deserve, today's actions will gut protections for countless migrants exercising their legal right to claim asylum.
Frankly, I would have preferred to address this issue through bipartisan legislation.
This action will help us gain control of the border.
Let's fix the problem and stop fighting about it. I'm doing my part. We're doing our part. Congressional Republicans should do their part.
I believe that immigration has always been the lifeblood of America. We're constantly renewed by an infusion of people and new talent.
The simple truth is there is a worldwide migrant crisis.
The Statue of Liberty is not some relic of American history. It stands for who we are as the United States. So I will never demonize immigrants. I will never refer to immigrants as a poisoning the blood of a country. Further, I'll never separate children from their families at the border.
The border is not a political issue to be weaponized.
Millions of people have poured into our country – and now, after nearly four years of his failed, weak leadership, pathetic leadership, crooked Joe Biden is pretending to finally do something about the border.
He tried to convince us all for all this time that there was no way he could possibly fix the mess.
In this hemisphere alone, we've seen more people on the move since World War II.
