Biden administration limits asylum seekers at US-Mexico border with new executive order

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order aimed at controlling the US-Mexico border. The order temporarily shuts down the border to asylum seekers attempting to cross between lawful ports of entry when daily crossings exceed 2,500. According to reports, this threshold was already surpassed on Monday with 3,500 illegal crossings recorded by officials. Under the new rules, the border will reopen only once the number of daily crossings falls below 1,500. The order also introduces a more rigorous standard for establishing credible fear of returning to one's home country for those seeking asylum. The move comes after Republicans rejected a bipartisan immigration deal and amid concerns over the surge in migrant arrivals at the US-Mexico border.
