2024 US Presidential Election
Biden Withdraws from Presidential Race, Endorses Kamala Harris as Democratic Nominee
President Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, citing it is in the best interest of his party and country for him to stand down. He has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement, making her the first woman, Black person, and person of South Asian descent to potentially become the Democratic Party's nominee. Biden's decision comes after weeks of pressure from fellow Democrats, who had lost faith in his ability to defeat Donald Trump.
Harris, 59, starts out in a strong position to replace Biden, having already accumulated pledged delegates during the primary process earlier this year. Grassroots voters will hope that she will better serve their interests than Biden did during the initial nomination race. Andrew Yang, who ran against Biden for the party's nomination in 2020, has also expressed support for Harris.
