Avocado Inspections Halted in Mexico's Michoacan Over Security Fears
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has temporarily halted inspections of avocados and mangoes originating from the Mexican state of Michoacán. This is not a new development, as previous suspensions have occurred in the past. The suspension aims to ensure that exported avocados meet US safety standards. Mexico accounts for 89% of US avocado imports, making this decision significant for one of Mexico's top farm exports.
The USDA has suspended inspections due to concerns over the quality and safety of these products. While produce already cleared for export will not be affected by this decision, a prolonged suspension could impact US avocado supplies if inspections are not resumed.
