Australian court rules transgender woman's removal from female-only app discriminatory

Roxanne Tickle, a trans woman, was denied access to the Giggle for Girls app in 2022 due to her gender identity. The app's founder, Sally Grover, revoked Tickle's account after seeing her photo and assuming she was male. Tickle sued the app and Grover for unlawful gender identity discrimination, and the Federal Court of Australia ruled in her favor, finding that she was a victim of indirect discrimination. The court ordered the app to pay Tickle A$10,000 plus costs, but declined her request for a written apology. This case is considered a landmark ruling on gender identity in Australia, marking the first time the Federal Court has made a ruling on the issue.
